10 Healthy Diet Habits to Improve Health

A healthy diet isn't just a short-term trend; it's a lifestyle that promotes vitality, longevity, and overall well-being. What we eat impact our physical and mental health.  Here are 10 essential healthy diet habits that will help you improve your health and your relationship with food.

1. Balanced and Varied Diet

A healthy diet is all about balance.  Variety is the key to a balanced diet. Consuming a wide range of foods ensures you get diverse nutrients your body needs. Aim for a colourful plate, incorporating different fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins to ensure a broad spectrum of nutrients. Ensure that you also have a small amount of fat in your meal.

2. Whole, Unprocessed Foods

Whole foods, like whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables, are rich in essential nutrients and fibre. They provide sustained energy, support digestion, and help maintain a healthy weight. These foods are rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants vital for optimal health.  Aim to make whole foods the foundation of your diet.

3. Hydration: Drink More Water

Hydration is key to a healthy body. Water is essential for digestion, nutrient absorption, circulation, and temperature regulation. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and more if you're physically active or in hot climates. Our body is largely water so we need to replace what is lost throughout the day.

4. Reduce Processed Foods and added sugar

Processed foods often contain high levels of sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats. These can lead to various health problems, including obesity, cardiovascular issues, and diabetes. Minimize your intake of processed foods, and opt for fresh, whole alternatives.  Also read the food labels and understand what is in the foods you are buying.

5. Healthy Fats

Not all fats are created equal. Include healthy fats from sources like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil in your diet. These fats are essential for brain health, hormone production, and overall well-being.

6. Portion Control

Portion control is crucial even when eating healthy foods. Be mindful of portion sizes to prevent overeating. Listening to your body's hunger and fullness cues helps maintain a healthy weight. The size of your portions matters. Even healthy foods can lead to weight gain if consumed in excess.

7. Meals and Snacks

Eating regular, balanced meals and snacks throughout the day helps maintain stable blood sugar levels and prevents overindulgence during larger meals.  We were always taught to eat at a certain time and finish what is on our plate.  You should only eat when you are hungry and snacks aren’t required unless your bod tells you your hungry.  We should only be eating approximately every 4 hours so we have enough time to digest what we ate previously.

8. Meal Preparation and Planning

Preparing meals at home allows you to have control over what you eat. Planning your meals in advance can help ensure you have access to nutritious options and avoid unhealthy, impulsive choices multiple times a week.  Reserve your takeaway meals for something special.

9. Listen to Your Body

Your body provides cues about hunger and fullness. Pay attention to these signals. Eat when you're hungry and stop when you're satisfied.

10. Mindful Eating

Mindful eating involves paying attention to your eating habits and sensations and being present while you are eating. It allows you to savour and enjoy your food, recognize hunger and satiety cues, and prevent overeating. Put away distractions like your phone and the TV and really focus on your food.
